FLAGS FOR FREEDOM

Anthony Leger, Program Chairman for the month introduced Past President Frank Cricchio as our guest speaker.  Past President Frank Cricchio is a well known photographer.  He has received the United Nations Award for Leadership and the Lifetime Achievement Award which both were displayed at our meeting.  Past President Frank gave us a slide presentation on the history of our flag and other flags for freedom.  Without the Internet, his lecture would not have happened.  Past President Frank told us that the presentation was all in the name of education.  After Desert Storm, all the flags were sold in America within 10 days.  After 911, it took only 3 days to deplete the total inventory in our country.  There was a picture of what was left of the flag that was on top of one of the buildings after 911 which changed our world.  The photograph of Iwo Jima changed mankind.  The photographer who took the photograph was Joe Rosenthal.  He took only two shots and the famous photograph was selected as one of the top 100 images to influence mankind.  It is the only image on a postage stamp of living people which is against the law.  Past President told us the interesting story of how the flag was named “Old Glory”.  He told it as though we were going to make a documentary.  The Star Spangled Banner Flag which inspired the National Anthem.  Francis Scott Key was inspired and wrote a poem called “To Anacreon in Heaven” which was better known as the “The Star Spangled Banner”.  The “Old Glory” flag is being restored for $18 million.  The flag is only flown upside down is when you are in trouble or need help.  Where is the American Flag never flown at half mast?  The answer is on the surface of the moon.  Who was the Presidential candidate who used his photograph on the U.S. Flag for election?  The answer is Abraham Lincoln.  Past President Frank told us the history of Uncle Sam.  The Great Star Flag was on the casket of President Abraham Lincoln when he was assassinated.  It was also on the casket of President John F. Kennedy.  Past President Frank also told us that if we were to acquire another state, the new flag would be flown on the next Fourth of July.  We appreciate Past President Frank Cricchio’s time in preparing the presentation of our American Flag and we hope to have him back for a continuation of his presentation.
