UP FRONT

President Craig Noble presided over the January 5th meeting. The invocation and pledge to the U.S. flag was led by Vice President Mark Porterie. Past President Ray Depwe led the club in singing "Ifm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover". Janie Johnson introduced our visiting guests and Past President Bill Coons gave the attendance reports. President Elect George Newsome gave the Rotary Minute. Past President Clayton Salter reported no anniversaries this week.

FRIENDSHIP DOLLAR

Past President Floyd Marceaux had the Friendship Dollar and gave it to No. 20; Doris Hale.

Rotarian Clark Calvin (guest of Past President Ike Akbari), Jerry Thompson (guest of Director Libby Arnold), and Rotarian Ted Meeks (guest of President Elect George Newsome).

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Elect George Newsome told us in the Rotary Minute that is important to show as a Rotarian is to wear your Rotary pin, be proud of it, and people can ask about it. You can invite them to a meeting and increase membership.

President Craig Noble told the club that if anyone knows where the original Clubfs By-laws are or have a copy of them, please let him know.

Past President Ray Depwe told us a brief history of Arthur Stilwell.

Good news was reported by Director Russel Buss, Past Presidents Jeff Hayes, Frank Cricchio, Bill Worsham, and Director Libby Arnold.

President Craig Noble presented a token of our appreciation to Earline for her service throughout this past year and all she does for us through Rotary.

TUESDAY

Beaumont-Spindletop at ElegantefHotel at noon. Port Neches and Groves have combined and they meet at the Pompano Club at noon. Orange meets at the Sunset Groves Country Club at noon.

WEDNESDAY

Beaumont-Downtown meets at the Elegantef Hotel.

THURSDAY

Bridge City at the Community Center at noon.

FRIDAY

Nederland meets at the Pompano Club at noon. Remember you can make up on the Internet at www.rotaryeclubone.org. You can make up 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after. Please visit our website at www.portarthurrotary.org in your spare time.

Director Russel Buss, Program Chairman for the month of January, has announced the following programs:

JANUARY 26TH-ROTARIAN BILL MCCOY.

The theme for January will be Positive Port Arthur.

ELMORE ADDRESSES CLUB

Mary Jean George introduced Ms. Willie Mae Elmore as our guest speaker. Ms. Elmore is a life long resident of Port Arthur. Ms. Elmore graduated from Lincoln, Lamar University, and Prairie View. She started her nursing career at St. Maryfs Hospital and started the first kidney unit in Jefferson County. She has worked as a school nurse, the City of Port Arthur, Park Place Medical Center, taught nursing at Lamar State College, and a member of different organizations. Ms. Elmore is also a member of the Rotary Club of North Port Arthur and member of the School Board. She is very involved in her church. She is also a poet and has published two books. Ms. Elmore talked to us about where we are at this day and age and what we can do to make it better. Ms. Elmore told about her family background and her siblings made a pack that they would work hard and get an education and not be on welfare. It was important to her to make something out of herself. Ms. Elmore told us that if we donft invest in our young people, we will not have nothing here. If you look at the hospitals, nursing homes, and home health they are booming because the baby boomers are all out there. She has worked with young people and have graduated over 1,000 young people. If we donft start preparing them for the future, where would we be. We have to leave a legacy.
