THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

UP FRONT

President Craig Noble presided over the December 15th Annual Christmas Party. The invocation and pledge to the U.S. flag were led by Secretary-Treasurer Frank Cricchio. Secretary-Treasurer Frank Cricchio also gave a brief history on the song "Taps". Past President Bill Coons gave the invocation. President Craig Noble recognized District Governor "Ulli" Budelmann, Mayor Deloris "Bobbie" Prince, Police Chief Mark Blanton, and members and their guests.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

If you would like to donate to the scholarship of the young lady that will be honored at the party, you may do so and it will be added to your bill also. The donation will be tax deductible. If the young lady decides not to use the scholarship, the money on hand will be transferred to the Mack Pond Endowment Fund and has about $50,000 in that fund so far and is a perpetual fund.

Past President Roger Cowles told the club that this is 23rd year of the Holly Day Fund started by Past President Ray Depwe. It starts on Thanksgiving Day is sponsored by the Port Arthur News, the Retailed Merchants, and our Rotary Club. The Holly Day Fund has raised almost $200,000.

President Craig Noble thanked President Elect George Newsome, Secretary-Treasurer Frank Cricchio, and all those who helped planned the Christmas Party. President Craig also thanked the Sacred Heart-St. Mary Male Choir for their entertainment for our party, and all those who wore their Paul Harris ribbons and medallions. He thanked Bart Bragg for taking pictures of Rotarians to update our membership roster book. The cost of the pictures were $7.50 and will reflect on your next invoice.

President Craig Noble presented Perfect Attendance awards to President Elect George Newsome (1 yr.); Mary Gene George (3); Johnny Brown (5); Past President Ken Burke (15); Past President (17); Past President Jeff Hayes (21); Past President Ray Depwe (25); Past President Clayton Salter (27); Past President Bill Coons (28); Past President Floyd Marceaux (43); Past President Cecil Balzersen (44); and Secretary-Treasurer Frank Cricchio (52).

Beaumont-Spindletop at Elegante’Hotel at noon. Port Neches and Groves have combined and they meet at the Pompano Club at noon. Orange meets at the Sunset Groves Country Club at noon.

Beaumont-Downtown meets at the Elegante’ Hotel.

THURSDAY

Bridge City at the Community Center at noon.

FRIDAY

HOANG RECEIVES "I MADE A DIFFERENCE AWARD

Secretary-Treasurer Frank Cricchio read a letter that he wrote about Kaylin Tuyet Lynn Hoang’s bravery and than had Kaylin come to the stage to accept the "I Made A Difference Award". Mayor Deloris "Bobbie" Prince congratulated Ms. Hoang and read a Proclamation honoring Ms. Hoang. Mayor Prince presented a check on behalf of Roosevelt and Marie Petry and GP Industrial for $500 to Ms. Hoang. Police Chief Mark Blanton said his officers will be honoring Ms. Hoang at their banquet in June of 2012 and presented her with a Proclamation on behalf of the Port Arthur Police Force. District Governor "Ulli" Budelmann was glad to be invited to our party and honor our first recipient of the "I Made A Difference Award". He said that Ms. Hoang served above self. The District Governor decided to make two contributions to Ms. Hoang’s scholarship; one comes from the Rotary District and one from himself. District Governor Budelmann encouraged all Rotarians to make a contribution to the scholarship if you haven’t already done so. Julie Nguyen, mother of Kaylin Hoang, thanked our club and those who made contributions to the scholarship fund. Past Presidents Sam Monroe and Tom Neal announced a $2000 scholarship to Lamar/Port Arthur. Kaylin’s sister, Kayla Hoang was also in attendance. On Nov. 20, 2011, an armed man entered the home and held the family of five at gunpoint. Kaylin was able to sneak to her room, hide under her bed, and call 911. Kelly Pham, grandmother and Chien Nguyen, grandfather were also in the house at the time of home invasion. Kaylin managed to escape and seek help. Kalylin’s bravery gave Secretary-Treasurer the idea for the award.
