H.O.W. CENTER, INC.
Past President Ken Burke, Program Chairman for the month of October, introduced Daniel Jeans as our guest speaker. Mr. Jeans was born in Port Arthur and raised in Nederland. He graduated from Nederland High School and attended Lamar. Mr. Jeans and his wife, Paula, have been married for 25 years. Mr. Jeans became an active volunteer in local city and county jails and criminal justice organizations. Mr. Jeans works to keeping the men out of jail and trying to keep them from repeating themselves that got them to go to jail in the first place. Mr. Jeans has worked in construction here in the area and in Kentucky. Mr. Jeans has been the Executive Director of the H.O.W. Center in Beaumont since April of 2009. The H.O.W. Center is a recovery home for men recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. People call on a daily basis and his day usually runs about 6 in the morning until 1-2 at night or early next morning. Mr. Jeans told us that homeless people do not know there is a time limit. Residents receive 3 meals a day and snacks, a safe place to sleep, a home phone number, laundry facility, lounges and an Education Center with computer access. Mr. Jeans told us that 11% come out of institutions. Mr. Jeans said they do not take any sex offenders or aggravated offenders and you must be a male and over the age of 18 years. The only thing that H.O.W, Center does not provide is cigarettes. They furnish everything else through the food bank and donations. Residents must remain drug/alcohol free and work a 12 step program with a sponsor. They must pay rent either by getting a job or other regular income. While at the H.O.W. Center, residents develop skills needed to grow and become successful, productive citizens. Mr. Jeans said they started out housing 3 men in 1992 and now they are licensed by the City of Beaumont to house 30 men.
